“Tagged Out Gobbler”
This may not look like a special gobbler to anyone else, but this gobbler is a milestone for me. This gobbler allowed me to tag out in New York! Dad and I went up on the hill to hunt at around 9 after we hunted another spot. There is an opening up on top that there are always turkeys in, and so we are walking up to it and we hadn’t called (which we should have). Because there were turkeys out in that opening, they got spooked and got out of there. Well fast forward a couple of days and I decide I am going to go in there in the morning before daybreak, well I got in there a little late and walked right under where they were roosted and they started flying out of there from every direction. That day was a bust I wouldn’t have done anything with them that day, so I went back to the house. On Monday this week, I decided to go in there around 8 to see if they would come back in that field around 9-10. At around 10:15 I heard a gobbler on the other side of the hill gobble I called and he didn’t answer, so once it got to 11 I knew I wouldn’t be able to do anything else, so I went back home but… I left my blinds back there and laid down for the morning. So I woke up the next morning and hit the hill, and I had to hike all the way around where I thought they were roosted and right as I was getting to my spot he gobbled close. So I quietly set up my blinds and waited and I could hear a hen putting up on the roost, so she must have seen me. That gobbler just kept gobbling and then he flew down and there were 2 jakes and about 6 hens as well. He hung out on my left in the woods where I couldn’t see him and I could just keep hearing him gobble, so I just waited. The hens finally made it out in the field and then I saw the jakes and Gobbler and when he gave me a clear shot in the opening I took it and that is how I ended my New York 2023 turkey season!!
